????️ What it is
The Shimano Low Viscosity Mineral Oil is a special low-viscosity hydraulic fluid designed for new-generation Shimano brake systems.
⚙️ Key idea (very important)
⚠️ This is NOT the same as standard Shimano mineral oil
Shimano now has two types of mineral oil:
- ???? Standard mineral oil (older & most systems)
- ???? Low Viscosity (LV) mineral oil (new high-performance systems)
???? What “low viscosity” means
- “Viscosity” = thickness of the fluid
- Low viscosity = thinner oil
What that improves:
- Faster brake response
- Better performance in cold conditions
- More consistent lever feel under extreme use
???? Designed for:
- Enduro
- Aggressive trail riding
- High-performance braking systems
???? Performance benefits
???? Better modulation
- Smoother, more precise braking feel
❄️ Improved cold performance
- Oil flows better in low temperatures
???? Heat stability
- Handles repeated heavy braking without fade
???? Mineral oil advantages (general)
- Does not absorb moisture (unlike DOT fluid)
- Non-corrosive
- Safer to handle
- Less maintenance-sensitive
⚠️ CRITICAL compatibility warning
This part matters the most:
✔ Compatible ONLY with:
- New Shimano systems like:
- XTR M9200 / M9220
- Selected newer brake models
❌ NOT compatible with:
- Older Shimano brakes (Deore, SLX, XT, older XTR, etc.)
- Most common Shimano hydraulic systems
???? Using it in the wrong brakes can:
- Damage seals
- Cause leaks
- Ruin braking performance
⚠️ Another myth to correct
❌ “All mineral oil is the same” → FALSE
- Shimano oil is specially formulated
- Other brands (even if labeled mineral oil) can:
- Swell seals
- Cause failure
???? Always use Shimano-approved fluid
???? Strengths
- High-performance braking feel
- Excellent temperature stability
- Non-toxic and safe
- Ideal for aggressive riding
???? Limitations
- Very limited compatibility
- Easy to confuse with standard oil
- More specialized (not universal)
- Wrong use = expensive damage
???? Real-world verdict
This oil is:
???? A specialized high-performance brake fluid for Shimano’s latest brake systems—not a general-purpose replacement oil.
???? Bottom line
- ✔ Excellent for modern high-end Shimano brakes
- ✔ Improves response and consistency
- ✔ Safe and stable fluid
- ❗ Only use if your brakes explicitly require it
???? Simple rule to remember
- Older Shimano brakes → Standard mineral oil
- New flagship brakes → Low viscosity oil (this one)
