Shimano 7-Speed Freewheel 14–34T (MegaRange style)

Shimano MF-TZ500-7 7-Speed Freewheel 14-34T

What it is

This is a:

  • 7-speed screw-on freewheel (not a cassette)
  • Shimano Tourney TZ / MF-TZ series
  • Gear range: 14–34T (wide range “MegaRange”)
  • Designed for entry-level MTB and commuter bikes

Key features

  • ✔ 7-speed drivetrain compatibility
  • ✔ Screw-on freewheel (threads onto hub)
  • ✔ Extra-wide climbing gear (34T sprocket)
  • ✔ Steel construction for durability
  • ✔ Works with Shimano 7-speed derailleurs

Gear range advantage

Compared to a 14–28T freewheel, this gives a much lower climbing gear:

Gear Range Ratio=34142.43\text{Gear Range Ratio} = \frac{34}{14} \approx 2.43

That means:

  • easier climbing (big improvement on hills)
  • slower top-end compared to tighter ranges
  • better for casual MTB or loaded riding

How it works (important)

  • This is still a freewheel system
  • The ratchet mechanism is inside the gear block
  • It screws directly onto a threaded rear hub

So:

  • ❌ not compatible with cassette freehub wheels
  • ✔ only works on freewheel-type hubs

Ride feel

  • very easy climbing gear (34T helps a lot)
  • larger jumps between gears
  • heavier drivetrain feel
  • slower shifting than modern cassette systems

Best suited for

  • entry-level mountain bikes
  • commuter / utility bikes
  • riders needing easier climbing gears
  • replacing older 7-speed freewheels

Pros

  • excellent low-end climbing ability
  • very affordable
  • easy installation
  • widely available replacement part
  • good for hilly terrain on budget bikes

Trade-offs

  • heavier and less efficient than cassette systems
  • larger gear gaps (less smooth cadence control)
  • limited upgrade path
  • requires freewheel-compatible hub

Bottom line

The Shimano 7-speed 14–34T freewheel is a budget-friendly wide-range drivetrain option, designed mainly to make climbing easier on entry-level bikes, trading off smoothness and efficiency for simplicity and low cost.
