????️ What it is

A semi-integrated (zero stack / ZS) headset for bikes with:

  • 44 mm head tube (internal diameter)
  • 1-1/8” threadless fork steerer

This is a very common standard on entry- to mid-range MTB and commuter frames.

???? Specs decoded

???? SHIS: ZS44/28.6 | ZS44/30.0

  • ZS44 (top & bottom) → cups press into a 44 mm head tube
  • 28.6 mm (top) → fits 1-1/8” steerer tube
  • 30.0 mm (bottom) → crown race seat on the fork

???? In simple terms: standard straight steerer MTB setup

⚙️ Bearing system (semi-cartridge / caged balls)

  • Uses steel ball retainers (caged bearings) instead of sealed cartridges
  • Pros:
    • Affordable
    • Easy to service and replace
  • Cons:
    • Less sealed from dirt/water
    • Shorter lifespan under harsh conditions

???? Materials

  • Alloy top cover (6061-T6) → lightweight and corrosion-resistant
  • Steel cups + crown race → durability where it matters

???? Stack height (~9.9 mm)

  • Low stack → keeps front-end height compact
  • Useful if you’re trying to maintain original geometry

⚖️ Weight (~106 g)

  • Fairly light for a budget headset
  • Includes small extras like star nut and top cap

???? Where it fits best

  • Hardtail MTBs with straight head tubes
  • Commuter or hybrid bikes
  • Budget builds or replacements

Neco headsets are especially common as OEM (stock) parts, so this is often a direct replacement.

⚠️ Things to check before buying

  • Your frame must be ZS44 top AND bottom
  • Your fork must be straight 1-1/8” (not tapered)
  • If you ride in mud/wet conditions → consider a sealed bearing upgrade

???? Bottom line

The H148 is a reliable, no-frills headset: affordable, easy to maintain, and widely compatible with standard frames. It’s not premium, but it’s a solid choice for everyday riding or getting a bike back on the road without overspending.
