What a “Speed handlebar mirror” actually is
✔️ Bar-end mounted mirror
- Fits inside or at the end of your handlebar
- Keeps your view clear of your arms/shoulders
- More aerodynamic and cleaner look than stem-mounted mirrors
This type is very common for both bicycles and motorcycles
⚙️ Key features (based on typical models)
-
Universal fit
Usually designed to fit standard handlebars (around 22–25mm diameter) -
Adjustable viewing angle
You can tilt/rotate it to get the best rear view -
Compact design
Smaller than car-style mirrors but still gives decent visibility -
Simple installation
Usually:- Insert into bar end
- Tighten an expansion bolt
- Adjust angle
Pros
- Cleaner look than big mirrors
- Better rear visibility than no mirror
- Cheap and easy upgrade
- Doesn’t clutter your handlebars
Cons (be realistic here)
- Smaller mirror = limited field of view
- Can vibrate on rough roads
- Needs proper positioning to be useful
- Not as effective as turning your head (still required)
⚠️ Important before buying
- Check if your handlebars are open-ended (some have plugs you must remove)
- Make sure it fits your:
- Bike type (MTB, road, commuter)
- Handlebar diameter
- Decide left or right side (in South Africa, left-side mounting is usually more useful for traffic awareness)
Is it worth it?
- ✔ Good for commuting & city riding
- ✔ Helpful for extra safety awareness
- ✖ Not a full replacement for shoulder checks
- ✖ Cheap ones can feel flimsy
Quick advice
If this is the same low-cost Speedmaster mirror:
- It’s fine as a budget option
- But don’t expect premium clarity or stability
