Why You Need To Wear Cycling Sunglasses

Whether it’s on the road or the trail, as cyclists we are constantly bombarded with objects that should be nowhere near our eyes. From stones, dirt, branches, bugs, crashes and UV rays, we need sunglasses that are going to protect us from all of this.

You can’t see UV rays, but the damage is being done every second your eyes are exposed. UV ray damage builds up over time and can lead to macular degeneration, cataracts, photokeratitis and pterygium. The best protection out there for your eyes is a pair of sunglasses designed specifically for sport and that provides protection without distorting your view.

When looking for cycling specific sunglasses we always base our choices on:

Full UV protection across all spectrums
Impact protection
Anti-fogging abilities
Ability to switch lenses for changing conditions
Wide coverage and field of view

Having been in the game for over 80 years, we’ve tried and tested a huge variety of brands and continue to trust our eyes, as well as our customers, with the following brands:

Oakley
Rudy Project
Darcs
POC

Technologies across our ranges include:

Polarization. Polarizing filters act to remove blinding glare which can hide potholes and other dangers. Glare is distracting and can affect your focus. When your focus is on powering to the finish line, glare is the last thing you need in the way.

UV protection: All our sunglasses in store and online provide full protection from UV rays,

Rudy Project have developed their ImpactX 2 lenses to provide full UV and impact protection, with the benefit of lightening and darkening according to changing light conditions. Let’s have a look at the technology:

Then we take a look at an object hitting Oakley lenses at 164km/hr (102 MPH) and still providing optimal protection without shattering:

Sunglasses really are more than just fancy ad campaigns with top athletes, they’re vital equipment on the bike. Even if you don’t want any light protection, at the very minimum we recommend that you get hold of a pair of sunglasses from one of the above brands with clear lenses. All our suppliers clear lenses offer the same UV protection and impact protection as their darker lenses.
