Table Mountain Trail Sharing Routes Announced

Cape Town mountain bikers will be thrilled to hear the news that has been years in the making. For those who love the open spaces the city has to offer, it’s always been frustrating not having access to as many trails as we’d like. With the new routes opening mostly from 1 December 2016, this all changes. This message is from Table Mountain Bikers:

Hi Everyone
After many years of limping along, we have completed the process and it
paves the way for the opening of additional cycling routes on the mountain.
When will the trails open? Most of them will be accessible from 1 December
2016.
Here is the list.Study it carefully and take note of the additional info.

Uncle Pat’s Track
Route around Lion’s Head : above Fresnaye & Clifton, which ends on The Glen Road.
The firebreak footpath above Tamboerskloof, which runs above the German
School and High Places, all the way to Kloof Nek (comes out at the speed camera) Not all rideable at present, some trail work required in the gullies.
The Glen (more suitable to downhill riding than up)
The jeep tracks above Camps Bay on the slope of Table Mountain.
The Pipe Track section from Kloof Nek Rd to the point where the last jeep tracks joins it from below. This section will not open 1 December! There is trail damage that needs to be repaired first.
The single tracks above the old quarry in Higgovale.
One jeep track in Newlands Forest that can only be accessed from the concrete path that runs next to the M5 (at Upper Cannon Rd) A gate will be installed to allow bicycle access. Very important!!!!!! Newlands Forest is a transit route only!!!!! This  will not become a cycling playground. If we abuse this deal, the route will be closed.
Kirstenbosch trail. A brand new route, high up in Kirstenbosch which allows cyclists to cross from Newlands Forest to Cecilia Forest. Please Note! This is a transit route only!!! Kirstenbosch is not becoming a cycling playground. If we abuse the right of access, the trail will be closed.
Cecilia Forest track to Constantia Nek. The high route from Kirstenbosch will take you along a jeep track to Constantia Nek. The lower route, along the cork oaks will also open. Please Note! These are transit routes and Cecilia Forest is not turning  into a cyclist playground. We abuse it, we lose it!

In a nutshell, the last 3 trail sections are a transit route that allows cyclists to move from the City to the Southern Suburbs, off-road. It is critical that we accept the restrictions and the fact that we are treading on sensitive ground.
