SRAM Eagle Groupset Guide

If you’ve been looking at upgrading your mountain bike drivetrain, chances are you’ve come across SRAM Eagle.

Eagle has been around for several years now and has become a familiar name on mountain bikes, from entry-level builds right through to high-end race bikes. The range has also grown considerably, with different levels of components and electronic AXS options available.

So what is the difference between GX Eagle, X0 Eagle and XX Eagle? And where does Eagle Transmission fit in?

Here’s a straightforward look at the SRAM Eagle range and what you need to know before choosing a groupset.

What is SRAM Eagle?

SRAM Eagle is SRAM’s range of 1x mountain bike drivetrains.

The idea is fairly simple. Instead of having two or three chainrings at the front, Eagle uses a single chainring combined with a wide-range cassette at the back. This gives you plenty of gearing for climbing without the need for a front derailleur.

A typical SRAM Eagle drivetrain includes:

  • Shifter

  • Rear derailleur

  • Cassette

  • Chain

  • Crankset and chainring

The wide gearing is one of the main reasons Eagle has become so popular for mountain biking. You can have a relatively small chainring at the front for climbing while still having enough top-end gearing for faster sections of trail.

It also makes for a cleaner and simpler drivetrain.

Which SRAM Eagle groupset is best?

There isn't really one answer to this. SRAM offers Eagle at different price and performance levels, so the right choice depends on how you ride and how much you want to spend.

The main groupsets you'll come across are Eagle, GX Eagle, X0 Eagle and XX Eagle, with AXS electronic shifting available on various setups.

SRAM Eagle

The standard Eagle range is aimed at riders who want the benefits of a wide-range 1x drivetrain without moving into the more expensive components.

It's a sensible option for general mountain biking and riders who aren't particularly concerned about having the lightest possible drivetrain.

For many riders, there's no need to spend more than this.

SRAM GX Eagle

GX Eagle is arguably the sweet spot in the SRAM range.

It has become extremely popular on trail bikes because it offers a good balance between price, durability and performance.

GX is also a popular choice for riders upgrading an existing bike. Rather than replacing a bike simply because the drivetrain is getting tired, upgrading to a GX Eagle setup can be a worthwhile way of refreshing the bike.

For regular trail riding, GX Eagle is more than capable of handling hard riding.

SRAM X0 Eagle

X0 sits above GX and brings more premium materials and construction into the drivetrain.

It's aimed at riders who want higher-end components but still want something that can handle serious trail and enduro riding.

The price difference between GX and X0 is noticeable, so it's worth considering what you're actually gaining for your type of riding.

If you're building a premium mountain bike or simply want a higher-spec drivetrain, X0 is a natural step up.

SRAM XX Eagle

XX Eagle is further towards the performance end of the range, with a particular focus on keeping weight down.

It's commonly associated with cross-country and high-performance mountain biking, where drivetrain weight can make more of a difference.

If you're building a lightweight XC bike or racing, XX makes more sense. For a rider doing weekend trail rides, the extra cost isn't necessarily going to translate into a noticeable difference on the trail.

SRAM Eagle AXS

AXS is SRAM's electronic shifting system.

Instead of a traditional gear cable running from the shifter to the rear derailleur, an AXS setup uses electronic communication between the controls and derailleur.

The obvious difference is the lack of a shift cable, but there are other benefits too. Shifting is consistent, the cockpit looks cleaner and adjustments can be made electronically.

AXS is available across different levels of SRAM's mountain bike range, including GX Eagle AXS, X0 AXS and XX AXS setups.

For riders who want electronic shifting without running cables through the frame, it's a very appealing option.

What is Eagle Transmission?

This is where things get a little more complicated.

Eagle Transmission is SRAM's newer-generation mountain bike drivetrain platform. It isn't simply an electronic version of the older Eagle groupsets; the drivetrain was redesigned around the Transmission system.

One of the major changes is the rear derailleur mounting system. Transmission derailleurs are designed to mount directly to compatible frames rather than using a conventional derailleur hanger.

Transmission was also developed with shifting under load in mind, which is particularly useful when climbing steep sections where you don't necessarily want to stop pedalling to change gear.

There is an important point here, though: Eagle and Eagle Transmission components shouldn't automatically be assumed to be interchangeable.

If you're upgrading an existing bike, check the exact drivetrain generation and frame compatibility before buying individual components.

SRAM Eagle cassette options

The cassette plays a big role in how an Eagle drivetrain feels on the bike.

The large sprockets provide the low gears that make steep climbs easier, while the smaller sprockets give you the higher gears for faster riding.

When replacing a cassette, don't just look at the number of speeds. You also need to consider the cassette standard, derailleur compatibility and the particular Eagle generation you're using.

This becomes especially important when comparing traditional Eagle components with newer Transmission components.

SRAM Eagle derailleur

The rear derailleur is arguably the most complicated part of the system.

It controls the movement of the chain across the cassette while also keeping the chain tension under control.

SRAM offers Eagle derailleurs at different levels, from more affordable mechanical options through to high-end electronic AXS and Transmission derailleurs.

If your current derailleur is damaged or worn, replacing it with the wrong generation can cause compatibility problems elsewhere in the drivetrain. It's therefore worth checking the exact model before ordering a replacement.

SRAM Eagle chain

The chain is often the component that gets overlooked when maintaining a drivetrain.

A worn chain doesn't just affect shifting. If you continue riding with a badly worn chain, it can also accelerate wear on the cassette and chainring.

This is particularly relevant with an Eagle drivetrain because replacing a chain is considerably cheaper than replacing a cassette and chainring at the same time.

If you ride regularly, checking chain wear should be part of your normal bike maintenance.

Keeping the chain clean and properly lubricated is also important, particularly when riding in dusty conditions.

Can you mix SRAM Eagle components?

This depends on which Eagle components you're talking about.

There are several generations of SRAM Eagle drivetrains, and Transmission introduced another set of compatibility requirements.

Some older Eagle components can be combined successfully, while others aren't designed to work together.

Before putting together an Eagle drivetrain, check:

  • Number of gears

  • Cassette compatibility

  • Freehub body

  • Chainring compatibility

  • Derailleur generation

  • Shifter compatibility

  • Crankset

  • Bottom bracket

  • Frame compatibility if using Transmission

This is particularly important if you're only replacing one or two components rather than buying a complete groupset.

Which SRAM Eagle groupset should you buy?

For a rider who mainly wants a reliable mountain bike drivetrain, standard Eagle will do the job.

For someone who rides regularly and wants a good balance of price and performance, GX Eagle is probably the easiest recommendation.

X0 makes more sense for a premium build or riders who want higher-end components, while XX is aimed more towards lightweight and performance-focused builds.

Then there is AXS if wireless electronic shifting is important to you, and Transmission if your bike is compatible with SRAM's newer drivetrain platform.

In other words, spending more isn't automatically going to make your bike faster. It comes down to what you're riding, how often you're riding it and what you want from the bike.
