22.2 mm in Bicycle Stems (What it actually means)
The 22.2 mm measurement most commonly refers to a quill stem diameter, not a BMX handlebar clamp size.
⚙️ 1. Quill Stem Standard (Most accurate use of 22.2 mm)
On older bikes (and some BMX setups), 22.2 mm refers to the quill diameter, which fits inside a:
- 1-inch threaded fork steerer tube
- Internal steerer diameter ≈ 22.2 mm
Common uses:
- Old-school BMX bikes
- Vintage road bikes

The stem slides into the fork and is tightened using an internal wedge bolt system.
2. BMX Handlebar Clamp Size (important correction)
